MARU is an architectural practice based both in Porto and Beirut, founded by Bruno Marques and Aya Jazairi, and operating on projects in Lebanon, Portugal and Nigeria. Their global exposure turns Maru into a strong and versatile practice, responsive to the needs of new environments and adaptive to emerging technologies.
“maru” – meaning circle in Japanese – is inspired by the founders’ experience in Tokyo
Aya studied architecture at the American University of Beirut and completed her master degree at the University of Tokyo, also under the guidance of Kengo Kuma. Aya is specialized in architectural management, earning her second master degree from IE University and drafting her doctorate at the University of Tokyo. She also worked in the field of architectural management at Arata Isozaki’s office coordinating projects in Qatar, Egypt and France.
Bruno completed his undergraduate and master degrees in Architecture at the University of Coimbra and went to Japan to pursue his studies at the University of Tokyo — under the guidance of Kengo Kuma.
He worked at the offices of renowned architects Kengo Kuma and Itsuko Hasegawa, developing projects of several scales in diverse geographies such as Switzerland, Chile, Vietnam, China and Japan.
